Outstanding Faculty
A. World-recognized researchers
You will learn from kinesiology graduate faculty who have outstanding international reputations in their fields, reflecting active research programs funded by agencies like National Institutes of Health, American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, and NASA. The productivity of these research programs is evidenced by the annual number of peer-reviewed publications over the last 5 years of >300 papers/year (average 5.6/yr per faculty member). Faculty have won numerous research awards and 3 have earned the designation of University Distinguished Professor, the University’s highest honor.
B. Outstanding instructors/mentors
You will learn from faculty members with excellent instructional quality (overall effectiveness of 4.5/5.0) and who personally mentor graduate students. Priority is placed on graduate student professional development for research or professional careers.Faculty members have won teaching awards at the National (1), University (5), and College (3) levels.
Excellent opportunities
A. Small class sizes
All graduate faculty are involved in teaching. Class size for 600-level (senior) courses ranges from 20 to 50 students, while graduate courses at the 700-900 level typically have 5-15 students enrolled. These small class sizes facilitate group discussion and application of the most current scientific literature with experts in the field.
B. Participate in hands-on research in top-notch research laboratories
You will be able to experience cutting-edge hands-on research as part of a laboratory team in one of the graduate faculty members’ research labs. As you progress in your graduate studies, you will have increased opportunities for peer mentoring, leadership, and applying for your own research funding.
C. Opportunities to publish peer-reviewed research
You will receive mentoring and opportunities to help publish laboratory research findings. Over the last 5 years graduate students have helped co-author 160 peer-reviewed publications, with 121 of these papers having a graduate student as first author.
D. Opportunities to attend, present research at national/international meetings
You will be strongly encouraged to attend scientific meetings, with support from competitive travel awards from the Graduate School, College of Health and Human Sciences, and the Department of Kinesiology. Over the last 5 years, Kinesiology students have co-authors 224 presentations at national/international meetings, with 177 of these with a student as first author and presenter.
Excellent job/career placement post-graduation
