Systems of Supportive Housing

In the 2022 IDECF Video Competition, a team of three interior design students won first place for their research project detailing what and how systems should be applied for permanent housing that serves the homeless community.

Third-year students Savannah Hinck, Alexis Coleman, and Ashley Manzo presented their research findings in a video titled “Systems Thinking for Permanent Supportive Housing”. From their research, guided by Dr. Kaup, the team found that interior designers are an integral part of designing systems of housing that cater to individuals experiencing homelessness. When designing these environments, it is vital that designers focus on reducing reminders of trauma, creating a sense of safety and comfort, and rebuilding community for homeless individuals.
