Fall 2024
Dear alumni and Friends,
I am excited to welcome you to our departmental newsletter! It has been a while since we have updated you on our latest achievements in the department and I am excited to share some of the innovative initiatives we are implementing to enhance our program and prepare students for the future of the hospitality industry.
In this newsletter, learn how one of our faculty members plans to embrace cutting-edge technology with the introduction of robotics in hospitality settings, exploring how these advancements can improve guest experiences and operational efficiency. Not only will this initiative provide our students with hands-on experience with emerging technologies, but also prepare them for the evolving landscape of the industry.
For several decades, our hospitality program has been committed to providing meaningful applied learning experiences. Through internships and robust industry partnerships, we have consistently offered our students opportunities to develop practical skills and gain valuable insights. With the renewed emphasis on applied learning outlined in the Next Gen K-State strategic plan introduced by President Linton last year, we want to update our alumni and friends on how we have embraced applied learning in the past and how we will continue to enhance these experiences moving forward.
Additionally, we are excited to announce a new Agritourism Certificate program! This initiative will provide students with specialized knowledge in agritourism, an area of growing interest that merges hospitality with agricultural practices. This certificate will equip graduates with the skills needed to thrive in this unique sector, promoting rural development and tourism.
I always relish connecting with former students and alumni. Please reach out and reconnect. We’d love to welcome you back to speak with students, or better yet, to recruit and hire a HM Wildcat.
Go ‘Cats!
In hospitality,
Kevin R. Roberts
Professor and Interim Head
Advisory Board Update
I’m Tamara Markham, a 1993 graduate of the Hotel and Restaurant Management program. Since joining the board in 2021, it has been my pleasure to serve as the current Hospitality Management Board President.
The Hospitality Management (HM) Board is composed of professionals in the hospitality industry who provide invaluable support and recommendations to the Department Head and faculty. Our Board is dedicated to increasing the program’s visibility, promoting its excellence, and advocating for the Hospitality Management Program within the industry. We actively work to advance the vision and mission of the Hospitality Management Program at Kansas State University.
HM to Launch Agritourism Certificate: A New Path for Agritourism Entrepreneurs
Students at Kansas State will soon have the chance to enroll in an innovative Agritourism Certificate program, designed to merge the worlds of agriculture and tourism in a way that responds to the growing demand for agritourism experiences. The proposed certificate, comprising 15 credit hours, aims to equip students with essential skills to manage and evaluate agricultural tourism operations. Currently, there are no undergraduate agritourism certificate programs in Kansas or the broader Midwest, positioning K-State to become a leader in this emerging field.
Bridging Theory and Practice: Applied Learning in K-State's Hospitality Management Program
Before embarking on their internship, students gain essential hands-on skills in HM 351, the commercial foodservice operations course that operates Lacy's Fresh Fare and Catering, which has been operating since 2017. This state-of-the-art facility provides students with the opportunity to practice culinary skills, manage catering events, and understand food service operations in a real-world environment. The lab serves as a creative hub where students can experiment with menu planning, basic food production, and customer service, setting a solid foundation for their future roles in the industry.
Bridging Tradition and Technology: HM Professors Transforming Hospitality Education
Two professors in the department are on a mission to blend the timeless art of hospitality with cutting-edge technology. Yue Teng Vaughan and Kevin R. Roberts, professors in the hospitality management department, are determined to equip their students with the skills needed to thrive in an industry increasingly dominated by artificial intelligence and robotics.
The inspiration for their initiative comes from witnessing the changing hospitality landscape, which has evolved dramatically in recent years. “The foodservice industry is changing,” Vaughan notes. “Students need to grasp not just the basics of hospitality, but also how technology is reshaping every aspect of the food supply chain.”

Students Shine at the Saint Louis Art Fair: Building Real-World Event Management Skills
In September, five students from the hospitality management program stepped out of the classroom and into the real world of event management at the renowned Saint Louis Art Fair. As part of their festival and fair management class, they dove headfirst into the heart of the action, helping to coordinate one of the top art festivals in the country. For them, this was more than just a school project—it was an experience that would shape their future careers in a meaningful way.
The Auction Chronicles: A Tale of Fear, Fumbles, and Transformation
By Cindy Lerick, MA, CFEE
Ah, my first year as an instructor—it was like stepping into a circus ring with no clue what the show was about. I had a lot of "firsts" in academia: I chaperoned four students to the IMEX conference in Las Vegas and attended the CMAA World Conference with a student. But none of that could compare to my biggest, most nerve-wracking challenge: HM 427: The Travel and Dining Auction.
